Thunder in Winter
Have you ever heard the old island legend about thunder in the winter? It is believed that if you hear thunder in the winter on Hatteras Island that it will snow in 10 days. We had a thunder storm here in Hatteras on the 10th of January. The island doesn’t get snow too often but, to see snow on the beach is absolutely breath taking. The dunes look like a large white blanket has been thrown over them and the shells are dusted with snowflakes. The largest snow storm recorded in Hatteras was in 1989. The snow fall was 13.3 inches.
